By Andy Katz | ESPN.comNebraska hired Tim Miles from Colorado State to replace Doc Sadler as coach on Friday.
Miles' contract, according to a source, is a five-year contract with a rollover for a sixth. Miles is due $1.4 million per year and increases $75,000 per year. The contract would be worth more than $8.7 million over six years.
A news conference is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. Saturday.
Miles was on campus Friday and has been in contact with Nebraska officials throughout the week. Miles flew back from Lincoln to Fort Collins, Colo., Friday evening.
Miles led the Rams to the NCAA tournament and a fourth-place finish in the Mountain West (8-6) and a 20-12 overall record. The Rams lost to Murray State in the second round in Louisville.
Miles spent five years with the Rams and improved the win total every season from seven to nine to 16 to 19 to 20. He also went to the CBI, NIT and now the NCAA tournament.
Miles previously helped North Dakota State transition to Division I.
Sadler coached the Huskers for six seasons without reaching the NCAA tournament. The first five seasons were in the Big 12, with the past season in the Big Ten. Nebraska finished 12-16 overall, 4-12 in the Big Ten.
Nebraska made inquiries, a source said, toward former Creighton coach and current Oregon coach Dana Altman, who decided to stay put. Nebraska also contacted a third party to test the interest of Tad Boyle of Colorado. But the Buffs coach decided against a move, as well.
Miles is well respected in the coaching community and is one of the most aggressive social media users among coaches. Miles is known to tweet during games with his sports information director taking his pep talks and tweeting them out.
Colorado State's opening will be an interesting move since the Rams are now moving into a hybrid league with the Mountain West merging with Conference USA. The league is losing San Diego State for the 2013 season as the Aztecs head to the Big West.
This is a critical time for Colorado State to stay relevant and the school will have to be diligent with the hire to ensure the Rams stay near the top of the MWC/C-USA.
