FILE - This is a March 25, 2008 file photo of Sir Jimmy Savile, who for decades was a fixture on British television. A year after he died, aged 84 and honored as Sir Jimmy, several women have come forward to claim he was also a sexual predator and serial abuser of underage girls. The child abuse scandal that has enveloped the BBC, one of Britain's most respected news organizations, is now hitting one of America's, as the incoming president of The New York Times is on the defensive about his final days as head of the BBC. Mark Thompson was in charge of the BBC in late 2011 when the broadcaster shelved what would have been a bombshell investigation alleging that the late Savile was a serial sex offender. (AP) ? The sex abuse scandal surrounding the late BBC children's television host Jimmy Savile widened on Sunday as police arrested former glam rock star and convicted sex offender Gary Glitter in connection with the case, British media said.

Police would not directly identify the suspect arrested Sunday, but media including the BBC and Press Association reported he was the 68-year-old Glitter.

The musician made it big with the crowd-pleasing hit "Rock & Roll (Part 2)," a mostly instrumental anthem that has been a staple at American sporting events thanks to its catchy "hey" chorus. But he fell into disgrace after being convicted on child abuse charges in Britain and Vietnam.

On Sunday, the BBC and Sky News showed footage of Glitter, who wore a hat, a dark coat and sunglasses, being taken from his home by officers and driven away.

British police do not generally identify suspects under arrest by name until they are charged. When asked about Glitter, a spokesman said only that the force arrested a man in his 60s early Sunday morning in London on suspicion of sexual offenses in connection with the Savile probe. He remains in custody in a London police station, police said.

Hundreds of potential victims have come forward since police began their investigation into sex abuse allegations against Savile, the longtime host of popular shows "Top of the Pops" and "Jim'll Fix It" who died at age 84 last year. Most allege abuse by Savile, but some said they were abused by Savile and others.

Glitter is the first suspect to be arrested in the scandal, which has raised questions about whether the BBC turned a blind eye to the alleged sexual crimes. It was not immediately clear if Glitter, whose real name is Paul Gadd, and Savile knew each other.

Glitter rose to fame in the 1970s with a string of U.K. hits and his look of shiny jumpsuits, silver platform shoes and bouffant wigs, but his music has often been shunned since his abuse convictions. In 2006, the NFL advised its football teams not to use the Glitter version of "Rock and Roll (Part 2)" at games.

Glitter was jailed in Britain in 1999 for possessing child pornography, and convicted in 2006 in Vietnam of committing "obscene acts with children" ? offenses involving girls aged 10 and 11. He was deported back to Britain in 2008.

Police have said that though the majority of cases it is investigating related to Savile alone, some involved the entertainer and other, unidentified suspects. In addition, some potential victims who reported abuse by Savile also told police about separate allegations against unidentified men that did not involve the BBC host.

The scandal has horrified Britain with revelations that Savile cajoled and coerced vulnerable teens into having sex with him in his car, in his camper van, and even in dingy dressing rooms on BBC premises.

One witness told the BBC that she once saw Glitter having sex with a schoolgirl in Savile's dressing room at the broadcaster's TV center in the 1970s. Glitter has denied the allegations.

On Sunday, the chairman of the BBC Trust said he was committed to finding out the true scale of the scandal to save the broadcaster's reputation.

"Can it really be the case that no one knew what he was doing? Did some turn a blind eye to criminality? Did some prefer not to follow up their suspicions because of this criminal's popularity and place in the schedules?" Chris Patten wrote in The Mail on Sunday.

The BBC has set up an independent inquiry into the corporation's culture and practices in the years Savile worked there. It also launched a separate inquiry into whether its journalists dropped an investigation into the allegations.

Bioimaging: Aim for the stars

ScienceDaily (Oct. 25, 2012) ? Glucose-amine rings turn star-shaped fluorescent dyes into powerful probes for imaging cancer cells in three dimensions.Early detection of soft-tissue diseases, such as breast cancer, typically requires invasive biopsies. Now, a new self-assembled nanoparticle developed by Bin Liu at the A*STAR Institute of Materials Research and Engineering and co-workers may soon make biopsies obsolete. The team's material significantly enhances the safety of two-photon microscopy (TPM) -- a technique that uses fluorescent probes to generate three-dimensional pictures of cancer cell structures in living tissue.

Although TPM provides deep access to cell tissue without significant photo-damage, finding suitable substances to act as light-emitting probes is challenging. 'Quantum dots' made from nanoscale aggregates of elements such as cadmium and selenium are excellent cell-structure illuminators, thanks to their bright and stable fluorescence. However, their inherent toxicity restricts many possible biological applications.

Liu and her team therefore turned to conjugated organic molecules to produce less toxic dyes for TPM. While such small organic molecules are normally unable to absorb sufficient amounts of laser light to initiate fluorescence imaging, the team resolved this problem by synthesizing a star-shaped material known as a dendrimer. Consisting of a central triphenyl amine core and three 'arms' made from extended conjugated chains, this unique geometry can induce much larger cross sections that can absorb two-photons better than isolated fluorescent dyes.

To ensure biocompatibility between the star-shaped dendrimer and cell tissue, the researchers had to employ a chemical trick. Inspired by the versatile binding behavior of chitosan, a natural polysaccharide, the team used a mild bromide-thiol reaction to attach several glucose-amine sugar rings to the dendrimer's arms. According to Liu, this process lowered the cytotoxicity of the dye and enabled them to functionalize it with folic acid ligands that target the surfaces of a breast cancer cell line known as MCF-7.

The team's experiments showed that the dendritic dye self-assembled into dispersed nanoparticles when submerged in water -- a form that increases two-photon-absorption cross sections and provides a high yield of laser-induced fluorescence. When they incubated these nanoparticles into the MCF-7 cells, subsequent TPM imaging revealed a bright fluorescence localized inside the cancer cell cytoplasma (see image). This data indicates that specific binding occurs between the dendritic dye and folate receptors on the MCF-7 surface.

Cell viabilities close to 100% at dye concentrations used for imaging studies confirms that this strategy is a safe and promising way to increase the use of TPM imaging. "We are keen to expand the current in vitro imaging to in vivo applications," notes Liu.

Linksys WUMC710 Wireless-AC Wi-Fi 5GHz Universal Media Connector Bridge with 4-Port Switch

Cisco Linksys' WUMC710 AC Wi-Fi Universal Media Connector Bridge is Linksys' pre-draft 802.11ac companion bridge to the Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Router AC 1750HD Video Pro EA6500 its newly released pre-draft 802.11ac router. While the Linksys media bridge did not give any noticeable performance boosts in streaming media, such as I witnessed with Buffalo's AirStation AC1300/N450 4-Port Gigabit Dual Band Wireless Ethernet Bridge WLI-H4-D1300 , Linksys' unit is a bit less expensive at $159.99 than the $179.99 Buffalo bridge, is very easy to set up, and is a decent way to connect devices such as gaming consoles, NASes, or smart TVs, to your home network.

What's a media bridge useful for? Say you have a smart TV in your downstairs entertainment room and a wireless router in your upstairs home office. You want Internet access for your smart TV, but it doesn't have built-in wireless connectivity. You can place a media bridge near that TV, connect the bridge wirelessly to the router upstairs, and then connect the TV to the bridge via an Ethernet cable. This will put the TV on your home network and bring it Internet access.

Specs
The WUMC710 has four Gigabit Ethernet ports?as most media bridges. The front panel includes a WPS (WiFi Protected Setup) button (for push-button connectivity with a Linksys Smart Wi-Fi router) and LEDs for connectivity, power, and wireless status.
The media bridge wirelessly pairs with the EA6500, allowing you to take advantage of the wired 802.11ac throughput speeds within your local network with devices connected directly to the Ethernet ports of the bridge. The device ships with a CD containing documentation, a quick install guide, a cat 5e cable and a power adapter.

It's a 5 GHz bridge with three internal antennas that deliver a 3x3 transmit /receive speed. The WUMC710 supports the pre-draft 802.11ac standard and wireless 802.11A and N. Since it's 5GHz, it won't work with single-band 2.4 GHz routers, which is OK, because the wireless connectivity if for connecting the bridge to the 5GHz-supported EA6500 router, not for connecting wireless clients. You can still connect wireless clients to the EA6500's 2.4 GHz band.

Setup
To set up and pair the Linksys bridge with the Linksys EA6500 router, it's best to initially place the media bridge near the router, (it can be moved later?Linksys recommends the device operates about five meters from the router).

Then, connect the power adapter and wait for the power LED to stop flashing?this took about 30 seconds in my testing.

Next, press the WPS button on the media connector and within 2 minutes, press the WPS button on the EA6500 router. When I did this in testing, the WPS button started to flash on the bridge and the illuminated Cisco logo on the EA6500 began slowly blinking?these flashing lights indicated that WPS pairing had commenced. After a few seconds the bride's WPS and wireless LEDs became a solid blue color?the pairing of the router and bridge had been made.

Testing
For testing, I connected a server to the bridge. I checked the server's network settings and was pleased to discover the server was part of the Linksys' EA6500 router's network via its Ethernet connection to the WUMC710.? I also checked the EA6500's Connected Devices list in the router's interface and saw the name of the server. My server also received Internet access through the bridge's connection.

One small issue to consider: If you make any wireless settings changes to the EA6500 router, you will have to pair the bridge and router again. I changed the network settings on the EA6500 by renaming the SSID for the 5GHz band. My server immediately lost connectivity on the network. The fix was easy enough: I just re-pressed the WPS button on the media bridge and then the router, which fixed the problem bringing my server was back online.

To test performance, I connected a Synology DS712+
NAS to a LAN port on both the router and then the bridge. I then wirelessly uploaded a 1.5GB file to the NAS from a laptop. Connected to the bridge via Ethernet, my NAS showed negligible upload speed difference as compared with the NAS only connected to the router. Both upload times were about 2 minutes uploading from a laptop to the NAS, with the bridged connection a little faster at 1 minute and 42 seconds. I expected faster speeds with the bridge connection, since it uses 802.11ac.

You may not see any performance gains with the bridge, even running both bridge and router in pre-draft 802.11ac mode. Still, the WUMC710 is very easy to set up and does a good job of to extending network connectivity to devices that wouldn't otherwise have it. The Linksys WUMC710 Wireless-AC Wi-Fi 5GHz Universal Media Connector Bridge with 4-Port Switch earns 3.5 out of 5 stars for networking hardware.

Super-dense neutron star is fastest ever seen

Astronomers have discovered an ultra-dense star that orbits with a dying stellar companion once every 93 minutes, making it the fastest-orbiting star of its kind.

The speedy object, a kind of neutron star called a millisecond pulsar, rockets through space at 8,100 mph (13,000 kph) or more, researchers said. Its lightweight companion ? which the "black widow" pulsar is destroying with a barrage of radiation ? is faster still, zipping around the system's common center of mass at 1.7 million mph (2.8 million kph) or so.

The pulsar, known as PSR J1311-3430, and its partner are separated by just 320,000 miles (520,000 kilometers) ? about 1.4 times the distance from Earth to the moon ? making them the most tightly bound such pair known.

Scientists spotted PSR J1311-3430 after combing through four years' worth of data collected by NASA's Fermi Gamma-Ray Space Telescope. The find marks the first time a millisecond pulsar (MSP) has been detected via high-energy gamma rays alone, researchers said.

"The discovery of this first MSP from direct gamma-ray pulsations opens the door to the detection of other extreme binary pulsars," study lead author Holger Pletsch, of the Max Planck Institute for Gravitational Physics (Albert Einstein Institute) in Hanover, Germany, told SPACE.com via email. [ Top 10 Strangest Things in Space ]

"Such discoveries can provide key insights into pulsar emission processes and the physics of close binary evolution," Pletsch added.

Exotic super-spinners
Like other neutron stars, pulsars form when massive stars die in supernova explosions and their remnants collapse into compact objects made only of neutrons.

When a mass as great as our sun's is packed into a space about the size of a city, the conserved angular momentum causes the resulting neutron star to spin very rapidly and emit a ray of high-energy light that sweeps around like a lighthouse beam.

The name "pulsar" derives from the fact that this beam appears to pulse (because astronomers see the beam only when it's pointed at Earth). "Normal" pulsars spin between 0.1 and 60 times per second, or hertz, but millisecond pulsars can rotate at 700 hertz or more. [ Top 10 Star Mysteries ]

Millisecond pulsars are thought to be revved up by accretion of matter from a companion star. Indeed, most millisecond pulsars discovered to date are found in binary systems. The newly discovered PSR J1311-3430, which is located in the constellation Centaurus, is no exception.

'Black widow' pulsar
Pletsch and his colleagues picked PSR J1311-3430's gamma-ray signal out of the pile of data Fermi has been collecting since its 2008 launch. It wasn't easy; it took a newly devised algorithm and a lot of computing power to find the pulsar, which rotates 390 times per second.

"It took about 5,000 CPU days to find the pulsar," Pletsch said. "The computing cost here increases with the 3rd power of the pulsar spin-frequency searched. We started searching at the lowest frequency and went upwards. This pulsar we found spins at 390 Hz. If we had to search up to 700 Hz, for example, the search would have required about 27,000 CPU days."

The gamma ray signal revealed a great deal about both the pulsar and its companion, which is presumably another stellar remnant.

For example, the team determined that the companion's diameter is less than 55,000 miles (88,000 km), making it smaller than Jupiter. But the odd object is at least eight times more massive than the giant planet, making the companion incredibly dense ? about 30 times denser than our sun, in fact.

Further, the researchers were able to calculate the pulsar's extreme proximity to its partner, which has dire consequences for the companion. PSR J1311-3430's intense radiation is vaporizing its poor partner, making the MSP what astronomers call a "black widow" pulsar, after the spider species in which the female kills the male shortly after mating.

"Continued irradiation of the companion by the MSP could also lead to a complete destruction of the companion, implying a production channel for isolated MSPs, whose formation is also still incompletely understood," Pletsch said.

Pletsch and his colleagues report their results online today (Oct. 25) in the journal Science.

Finding more hyper-spinners
Studying the PSR J1311-3430 system could help astronomers get a better handle on the formation and evolution of millisecond pulsars, Pletsch said.

"Such pulsar systems (as the one we found) and their present-day parameters are valuable 'fossils' of their evolutionary history," he said. "Often the most robust tests come from extrema. Since this MSP binary has the shortest orbital period known, it might become a key probe for different evolutionary scenarios in future studies."

The team's new search method may also help astronomers discover many more millisecond pulsars, which have historically been very difficult to find. Until now, scientists have detected their emissions primarily in radio wavelengths, researchers said.

"Direct detection of a binary MSP from gamma-ray data opens up new possibilities for future searches and studies of these phenomena," Pletsch said. "It implies that further MSPs, including other extreme binary pulsars, may exist among the bright, as-yet unidentified gamma-ray sources, but which are too radio-faint or obscured by dense companion winds to be found in typical radio searches."

Apple fails to wow as iPad sales disappoint

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Apple Inc delivered lackluster quarterly results and iPad sales fell short of Wall Street targets, pushing its stock slightly lower.

The results came as it heads into the crucial holiday season, when competition in the smartphone and tablet market will reach fever-pitch, with Apple pitting a new phone and iPads against Amazon.com Inc and Google Inc Android devices.

"We were happy with the 14 million iPad sales in the quarter. It exceeded our expectations," Apple Chief Financial Officer Peter Oppenheimer said in an interview. "But as the summer went on, the rumors were pretty rampant about the iPhone and iPad."

For the December quarter, Apple forecast revenue of $52 billion, below the average estimate of $55 billion, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Its fiscal fourth quarter revenue rose to $35.96 billion, roughly in line with the average analyst estimate of 35.8 billion, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Apple shipped 26.9 million iPhones, somewhat higher than the 25 million to 26 million that Wall Street analysts had predicted. Sales of the iPad came in at 14 million in the fiscal fourth quarter, well below lowered forecasts for the tablet.

Apple only had nine selling days of the new iPhone 5 in its fiscal fourth quarter, which means that all eyes are on the current holiday quarter.

Apple heads into the quarter after having refreshed almost all of its product lines, including an upgraded, full-sized iPad. The December quarter will show how well consumers respond to Apple's latest gamble - the new, smaller iPad mini that will goes on sale November 2. Iraq: Attacks kill 4 in security forces, 1 child

BAGHDAD (AP) ? Iraqi insurgents launched a new wave of attacks across the country targeting security forces and a local politician on Wednesday morning, killing four members of the security forces and one child, police and health officials said.

Militants in a speeding car attacked an Iraqi army checkpoint, opening fire from pistols fitted with silencers in Baghdad's western Mansour neighborhood, a police officer said. Two soldiers died in that attack.

The officer added that a roadside bomb exploded shortly afterward as a police patrol was heading to the scene of the Mansour attack, killing one policeman and wounding six people.

Shortly before dawn, a sniper shot at a police patrol on foot in the capital's eastern Mashtal neighborhood, killing one policeman, another police officer said.

In the northern oil-rich city of Kirkuk, a parked motorcycle packed with explosives went off near the passing convoy of a local politician, killing a 7-year old child and wounding four other people, a police officer said. Politician Ali al-Hashemi, a Turkoman, escaped unharmed, he added.

Kirkuk, about 290 kilometers (180 miles) north of Baghdad, is home to mix of Arabs, Kurds and Turkomen, who all are competing to control the city.

Health officials in nearby hospitals confirmed the causality figures. All officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to release the information.

The attacks came a day after insurgents attacked Shiite neighborhoods in Baghdad by car bombs and mortar rounds, killing nine people and wounding 26.

Civilians, security forces and officials are the favorite targets for insurgents seeking to undermine public confidence in government efforts to restore security.

Meanwhile, authorities summoned some employees of the Central Bank of to give their testimonies following allegations of financial wrongdoing, a judicial spokesman said.

Abdul-Sattar Bayrkdar of the Supreme Judicial Council said two groups of bank employees have been brought so far before the judges in the past two days, but he gave no specific numbers. None of the employees has been arrested.

Arrest warrants have been issued for 16 bank officials over corruption allegations raised by a special parliamentary committee formed to probe the bank. They include longtime governor Sinan al-Shabibi, a politically independent economist who has led the institution since 2003. He is out of the country.

The $100 million, underwater Chinese Avatar looks incredible

Two years ago it was announced that Bond girl Olga Kurylenko would star, along with no one else you?ve heard of, in a $100 million-budgeted, 3D Chinese ripoff of Avatar (the largest Chinese 3D production ever), called Empires of the Deep, whose synopsis goes as follows:

The fantasy adventure, set in ancient Greece, tells about a young man?s adventure in the undersea mermaid kingdom in order to save his father, while encountering ferocious sea monsters and gets involved in large-scale battles in the seabed between mermaids, monsters and demons. Kurylenko plays the Queen of the Mermaid Empire and stars opposite lead actor Steve Polites and Chinese actress Yanfei Shi.

Not since a giant Indian robot snake slithered around eating cars have I been so embonered by a synopsis for a foreign B-movie. They finally released a trailer, which you can watch below, and I?m here to tell you that it looks EVERY BIT the massively bloated Chinese mermaid adventure we were promised ? AND MORE! It looks like if you mixed Avatar with Clash of the Titans, drowned the baby, and then reassembled it in a Chinese sweatshop.

Or in other words, incredible.

?What is this place??

?A myth, my friend. The legends of the ages are true.?

There?s a lot to love in this, but I think my favorite shot was of the two clans of mermaid-people assembled with their giant fish, who run at each other for a climactic battle, Gangs of New York-style. Wasn?t there a Metalacolypse song about this?

UNDERWATER MERMAID EXPLOSION! Easily my favorite indie band of the last 10 years.

STOP IT, WILL FORTE! YOU?RE KILLING AQUAMAN!

Yes, I will see this film.

Texas Church: ?Vote for the Mormon, Not the Muslim!?

DISCUSS (0)

Posted by Matt Staggs on October 23, 2012

In what should in a just world result in an instant revocation of its tax-exempt status, the pastor of a Leakey, Texas church has endorsed Mitt Romney in the upcoming election:

The sign reads, ?Vote for the Mormon, not the Muslim! The capitalist, not the communist!?

That marquee standing outside a non-denominational church has become the talk of the town in Leakey ? about 90 miles northwest of San Antonio.

The Church in the Valley is run by Pastor Ray Miller. Miller declined an interview but did say the sign was solely his idea. He said he changes the sign weekly and this isn?t the first bold statement to be displayed.

LaCie intros Porsche Design drive for Macs with SSD and USB 30, helps the speed match the name

Porsche Design may not be directly involved in building German supercars, but there are certain expectations to be met, aren't there? LaCie is rolling out a new version of its Porsche Design hard drive skewed towards Mac owners that should offer more of the performance you'd associate with the automotive brand. The P'9223 Slim SSD is a third thinner than its ancestor but carries the option of a 120GB SSD that makes the most of the USB 3.0 port. If all runs well, nearly any Mac launched in 2012 can shuttle data along at a brisk 400MB per second. Demanding Mac fans will need to pay $150 for the flash-based edition to have the P'9223 feel truly Porsche-like; others only have to spend $100 if they're content with the Volkswagen pace of a 500GB spinning drive.

FIFA 13 Review - Video Games | Games Reviews Online in India ...

If you?re a football fan in India, chances are that you always look forward to two days every calendar year -- the opening weekend of the English Premier League and the launch of EA?s latest FIFA title. EA?s stranglehold and utter domination of the virtual football simulator game, slowly nurtured towards much adoration, has been noteworthy.

The disruptive bet of a new physics and gameplay feature introduced in FIFA 12 has been tweaked and perfected in FIFA 13, whereby the game doesn?t deviate too much from FIFA 12 and works towards improving the overall experience of the product. And FIFA 13 does so pretty well.

Presentation, new features
The mechanics of the game hasn?t deviated much from FIFA 12 to FIFA 13 -- the look and feel of the menus, cut scene animations, background atmosphere, physics, etc. But having said that, FIFA 13 admirably builds on the foundations of FIFA 12 by heightening the sense of realism experienced within the game. You can play real-life matches that reflect the form and shape of a team at any given day ? you can?t pick injured players, team morale is reflective of league position, etc. ? and the feature should be a great hit among fantasy football fans.

Prime among new features added to FIFA 13 is the skill games you have to take part in before kicking-off a game ? in FIFA 12 you had to run with the ball on the training ground which would transform into a packed arena. In FIFA 13 you play the skill games before kick-off, these are short snippets or challenges ? run into a designated area of the penalty box and put the ball in the top right corner of the net, take precise penalties, score a header, etc. ? randomized to help you focus before a game. It?s a great way of fine tuning technical parts of gameplay, too. Another aspect of the game that adds another level of realism to FIFA 13?s overall appeal is the in-game commentary ? the dynamic duo from FIFA 12 haven?t changed, but they call upon Geoff Shreeves and Alan McInally for updates from other live games and players injured during the game, respectively. This interplay between the commentators works seamlessly and is another nod towards FIFA 13?s mission towards improved realism in the game.

FIFA 13 is the first game in EA?s football franchise to support motion controllers ? yes, both Move and Kinect are supported. But gaming on the Move at least isn?t a fun experience ? you still have to use the left analog stick for player movement and the Move held in the other hand to point a cursor on the screen to aim passes, lobs or shots. Controlling and playing FIFA 13 through the Move motion controller isn?t as intuitive or natural as playing a round of golf in Tiger Woods PGA Tour 13 or swinging a racquet in Grand Slam Tennis 2. Motion controller support is clunky on FIFA 13 and it?s a work-in-progress for EA, something to focus on and fix in the next installment of the game.

Gameplay and graphics
You won?t notice anything drastically different between FIFA 12 and FIFA 13?s gameplay, other than a few subtleties in the latest version of the game. Player physics is fine tuned to further enhance depth and immersion in the game -- collisions are much more natural, the ball?s momentum matters while receiving a pass, player?s position plays a vital role in this regard, dribbling is even finer and precise than before, and that?s just a few noteworthy improvements. First Touch Control is the latest addition to the game, after the previous installments focused on dribbling and defensive aspects of the game.

FIFA 13 continues the encouraging gameplay mechanic tweaks introduced in FIFA 12 by making the game a little less predictive, and for all the right reasons. Sure it?s still easy to score a goal and yes the goalie could be more manoeuvrable but overall FIFA 13?s gameplay is very good, we have no complaints. And watching a game unfold on the screen isn?t far removed from the real deal. FIFA 13 successfully delivers a first class gaming experience, where one really feels that it?s far more than just a football simulator. Player likenesses have been improved, as usual, compared to the past version of the game, and all the new kits look great on them -- crowd animation remains largely unchanged, though. Glitches are either non-existent or next to none.

FIFA 13?s offline ?Become A Pro? and ?Manager? career game modes are a great way to spend time playing the title until FIFA 14 comes out. Minor nods to improving the long haul of a career game mode are evident -- for e.g., Manager mode gives you an improved home page, with descriptive coverage of things affecting your performance, players demanding to be in the starting lineup, CEO recommendation on a prospective player you?re signing or offloading to and from the team, and more. All of these are minor changes, but they help FIFA 13 become a better game than FIFA 12. The online gameplay is largely unchanged, with FIFA 13 introducing a Game of the Week which lets users take a crack at every weekend?s best game played with the same lineups and match conditions.

Conclusion
So should you buy the new FIFA 13? It?s a bit of a silly question, akin to asking Apple fans whether they?d buy the new iPhone 5. Some would question the pragmatism of spending Rs. 3,000 on a game that?s largely similar to last year?s edition with a handful of cosmetic overhauls and expected evolutionary upgrades. But that?s what we invariably end up doing, us football fanatics -- think of EA?s annual FIFA titles as subscriptions that we gladly renew every year. Fans of the franchise don?t even think twice before buying it, so invested they?re on EA and FIFA?s promise on churning up a truly spectacular football experience on our virtual screens. Surprisingly FIFA 13 is a better game than FIFA 12 and introduces features that the previous game lacks, minor updates or not, with features that you can only experience and enjoy in the latest installment of the game.

PES 2013?s gameplay may be slightly better than FIFA 13?s, and for people choosing between the titles an overwhelming reality remains. Those who have never played EA?s FIFA titles before, suffice to say that right now FIFA 13 is the definitive, most realistic and comprehensive football simulator experience you?ll ever play until FIFA 14 releases next year.

Gazans prepare to welcome Qatari ruler

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip (AP) ? Qatar's flags are flapping in the Gaza Strip as Palestinians welcome that country's ruler, the first head of state to visit the territory since the Islamic militant Hamas seized power there five years ago.

An honor guard awaits Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani at Gaza's southern border crossing, where he is set to enter from Egypt Tuesday morning. A song called "Thank you, Qatar" is playing on the radio.

Issam Da'aless, an adviser to Gaza's Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh, says the emir will travel with his wife and Crown Prince Tamim bin Hamad. Thousands of troops have been mobilized to secure the visit.

The emir will deliver more than $250 million in aid to the territory, a move that will ease Hamas' international isolation.

Car bomb kills 13 in Syrian capital

AMMAN, Jordan (AP) ? A taxi packed with explosives blew up near a police station in the Syrian capital Sunday, killing 13 people as the U.N. envoy tasked with ending the country's civil war pushed his call for a cease-fire in talks with President Bashar Assad.

The blast, which also wounded 29 people in the popular shopping district of Bab Touma, was overshadowed however by anti-Syria violence in neighboring Lebanon.

Hundreds of angry Lebanese protesters tried to storm the government headquarters in the capital, Beirut, blaming Syria for the Friday assassination of a top Lebanese intelligence official and accusing the government of being far too close to the Assad regime. For much of the past 30 years, Lebanon has lived under Syrian military and political domination.

In Syria, two government officials speaking from the scene of the blast said the taxi exploded 50 meters (yards) from the main police station in Bab Touma, a neighborhood in Damascus' Old City. They insisted on anonymity because they were not allowed to brief the media.

An Associated Press reporter at the site said blood stained the street and sidewalks, shards of glass littered the pavement from shattered shop windows, and the charred hulks of at least four cars littered the street.

Vegetable vendor Mohammad Hanbali, 27, said several people wounded in the blast were lying on the street when he rushed to help.

"It's a cowardly act, carried out by terrorists," said Hanbali, who was hit by a piece of shrapnel in the left leg.

State news agency SANA put the death toll at 13, while the anti-regime Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said at least 10 people were killed.

Bab Touma is mainly inhabited by Syria's Christian minority.

Damascus has been a frequent target of bombings in recent months, although it was once largely immune to the violence spreading across the country since the anti-Assad revolt began in March 2011.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for Sunday's blast, but Islamist groups fighting alongside the rebels have in the past said they target security installations in the capital.

In another part of the city, U.N. and Arab League envoy Lakhdar Brahimi met with Assad to push for a cease-fire between rebels and government forces for the four-day Muslim holiday of Eid al-Adha, which begins Oct. 26.

Brahimi said that he met earlier with Syrian opposition groups inside and outside the country to discuss his truce plan. He said he received "promises" but "not a commitment" from them to honor the cease-fire.

He told reporters that he "found an overwhelming response" from Assad's opponents to his cease-fire plan and that "all of them have said that it's a good idea which they support."

He declined to reveal Assad's response to his plan, viewed as a preliminary step toward a larger deal.

SANA reported that Assad assured Brahimi he supported his effort, but it did not say whether he committed to a truce.

"The president said he is open to any sincere effort to find a political solution to the crisis on the basis of respecting Syrian sovereignty and rejecting foreign interference," it said.

It added that Assad also stressed a political solution must be "based on the principle of halting terrorism, a commitment from the countries involved in supporting, arming and harboring terrorists in Syria to stop doing such acts."

?Syrian authorities blame the anti-government uprising on a foreign conspiracy and accuse Saudi Arabia and Qatar, along with the U.S, other Western countries and Turkey, of funding, training and arming the rebels, whom they describe as "terrorists."

For months, Turkey served as headquarters for the leaders of the ragtag Free Syrian Army before the rebel group shifted its command to Syria. It also hosts many meetings of the Syrian National Council opposition group. Relations between the two countries, once close, have been deteriorating since the crisis began last year and Ankara became one of Assad's harshest critics.

Brahimi said he was "hopeful that the holiday in Syria will be calm if not happy." He said that he will return to the country afterward. "If we find that this calm is actually achieved during the holiday and continued, we will try to build on it," he added.

Brahimi arrived in Damascus Friday after a tour of Middle East capitals to drum up support for the cease-fire. A range of countries including Iran, Iraq, Turkey and Germany have backed the idea.

Syrian government forces and rebels have both agreed in the past to internationally brokered cease-fires, only to then promptly violate them, and there is little indication that either side is willing to stop fighting now.

Elsewhere, in the northern city of Aleppo, a suicide bomber detonated his explosive-laden car in front of the French-Syrian Hospital at al-Zohour Street, causing material damage, but no casualties, SANA said.

Anti-regime activists say more than 33,000 people have been killed since the anti-Assad revolt started.

The Kennicots

Okay. This isn't a faction really, I suppose, but it is a family. I've expanded rather dramatically on Liesha's family, their origins, and some brief bios on her four brothers.

Liesha Granger Kennicot was born as the only daughter in a brood of five to Marshall Kennicot and Joni Granger.

The Kennicot men have all been doctors, lawyers, politicians, athletes. Marshall played professional football for a brief period of time. He heads a modest private law firm out of upstate New York. They are akin to the Kennedys in terms of pedigree, if one can say that without seeming uppity. A well-known family in the Untied States, and a familiar last name.

The Granger family have a reputation for being strong, dependable casters. They are not involved in High Magic, but are still respected. Joni's father is a Professor of Charms Theory at Berkley College in San Diego, CA. Liesha, being the only child of Marshall and Joni to exhibit magical aptitude, has her mother's maiden name as her middle name in order to continue on the legacy.

(Note: This gives Liesha a virulent hatred of Harry Potter and the misconceptions it gives about magic, but she keeps her middle name secret due to the unfortunate comparisons to a certain bushy-haired witch with whom she shares a name.)

Here are the rest of the siblings in order of age, from oldest to youngest.

Scott Michael Kennicot - Currently lives in Denver, CO. Works as an FBI Agent. He was active in high school, considering a career in baseball before deciding to become an FBI agent. He is not married, but has been living with the same woman for years. Her name is Robin. She keeps him in line.

Mark Allen Kennicot - Currently lives with his wife and three children in Aberdeen, SD. A bone doctor. Closest in age to Scott. Mark was the brainier of the two brothers in high school, and growing up. They competed against each other fiercely.

Brent Thomas Kennicot - Currently lives alone in New York City. Formerly a firefighter, was one of the first responders to 9/11. Was always quiet. Younger than Mark by two years, older than Liesha by two years. He's kinda a mystery. Not sure what to do with him yet.

Liesha Granger Kennicot - Many years younger than her brothers.

Ross Bennett Kennicot - The baby of the family. Four years younger than Liesha. In high school still when Liesha is in Chicago and in New York, by the time she moves out to LA he has decided to become a mechanic in Pennsylvania. Definitely the odd one out in terms of achievements. He could also be a stunt car driver. He turns into a witch hunter. Can't wait to explore him more.

Liesha's relationships with all of her brothers:

With Scott: Scott is many years older than Liesha, and as such, was rather distant with her growing up. He's like seven years older than her. When she was in high school, he was already training to be an FBI agent. They did not become close until Liesha had her accident. Scott is a little wary of Liesha's status as a magic user. The two have worked together on rare occasions in a professional setting.

Though distant when growing up, the two have grown a little closer now that they are both Federal agents. They discover they have more in common than they thought - same sense of humor, both workaholics, both tough-as-nails and stubborn, very stubborn.

With Mark: Mark is five years older than his sister. Mark was studying to be a doctor while Liesha was in high school. The case was similar as was with Scott - she grew up not really knowing them, but then, Liesha had her accident.

Mark, who was questing to be a bone doctor, was the first person Liesha told when she suspected what had happened to her. Her regenerative ability. They tested it together, they studied it. Mark being quietly interested in what his sister had to say, Liesha, terrified of what happened to her.

A 17-year-old Liesha, terrified, confiding in her 22-year-old brother, stabbing herself in the arm in front of him, showing him what happens. Fascinating to me. Out of all the brothers, Mark knows the most about Liesha.

With Brent: Brent and Liesha went to high school together. Doesn't really know him all that well. I need to work on this one more.

With Ross: "Kid" is something Liesha is used to being. Growing up, she always went out of her way to treat Ross with care and respect, even as her older brothers treated him like, well, a kid. Liesha likes to think she knows Ross the most out of her siblings, but is just as surprised as anyone to hear that he has become a witch hunter. Dun dun duuun.

I will add to this as needed.

Tesla's Supercharger network goes live in six California towns, encourages EV road trips

DNP Tesla's Supercharger network goes live in six California towns, EV road trips get easier

Time to go on that great California road trip, Tesla owners; the EV maker has just launched new Superchargers in six Golden State locations: Folsom Premium Outlets, Harris Ranch in Coalinga, Gilroy Premium Outlets, Barstow, Tejon Ranch in Lebec and Hawthorne. They appear to be strategically placed to ease journeys between San Francisco, Los Angeles, Lake Tahoe and Las Vegas, NV. The solar powered stations from SolarCity are designed just for Tesla vehicles, with Model S sedans being able to charge for free. According to Tesla, a Model S can be charged in about 30 minutes if you want to get around three hours of 60mph driving out of it, so you'll have plenty of time to grab an In-N-Out Double Double on your way to Sin City.

Beverly Hills Courier Astrology

TODAY?S BIRTHDAY (Oct. 19). The year brings a rebirth of your intellectual life, and you?re drawn to new interests, teachers and art forms. You?ll reap personal benefits from institutions, political and economic trends. A controlling force of the past will be eliminated in December. Loved ones celebrate a May accomplishment. Leo and Gemini people adore you.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23). You?re an expert politician, partly because you realize that politics doesn?t only pertain to large organizations. Politics is alive in every transaction between human beings. You?ll play the game well today.

SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21). It takes maturity to understand that much that happens in a day depends on what a person did the night before. Every action sets up the next action. Tonight?s agenda changes as you use this principle as your guide.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21). There?s much to be gained in the process of leaving. When you say goodbye to a situation, you are also saying goodbye to the person you were inside that situation.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19). You?ll have an opportunity to publicize your cause, make your request widely known or send a message to more people than you?ve ever been able to reach before.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18). Sometimes all it takes is a little push to send you flying. This is true when you?ve already tested your wings and have them fully extended, just waiting for someone to dare you.

PISCES (Feb. 19-Mar. 20). You are not a contrarian. For you to play devil?s advocate, or to adopt any conflicting point of view, you have to have an excellent reason?for instance, it?s really what you believe.

ARIES (Mar. 21-Apr. 19). You find yourself in a constant state of management with an endless to-do list absorbing your time. Reassign some of your tasks to someone else? Delegation equals freedom.

TAURUS (Apr. 20-May 20). Cool down and relax. There is nothing to be gained from rushing around. Besides, you look more confident and in control when you move slowly. The world will wait for you.

GEMINI (May 21-June 21). You?re inexplicably drawn to an odd adventure. This road seems potentially unpleasant and downright difficult. It?s the kind of thing you do just so you never have to do it again.

CANCER (June 2-July 22). You?re an excellent driver, so try to steer the action where you want to go. Same goes for conversation. Otherwise, tune out and get lost in your own thoughts, alienating the speaker.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22). Status matters. The perceived authority of the people involved in a deal affects how it goes down today. Whether in business or your personal life, do all you can to build your good name.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22). Trying to do a task perfectly robs you of the wonderful floating feeling of engagement in the same way that watching the clock prevents you from enjoying the moments.
